Melissa Schmalz

I have spent my life on the West Coast and have always been drawn to the serene strength of its forests, mountains and the ocean. I am a mental health clinician with over fifteen years experience providing individual, couples and group therapy. In addition to working with individuals and couples, I provide training for mental health and addictions workers as well as other groups on topics such as emotional intelligence, separation and divorce, and parenting teens. I work with people of all ages and backgrounds in understanding the challenges they face and the strengths they have to move through them. I look forward to working with you.

My therapeutic approach

My approach is collaborative, empathetic, and rooted in evidence-based practices.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a therapeutic approach that combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness strategies. It was originally developed to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder but has since been adapted to address various emotional and behavioral challenges. DBT focuses on helping individuals regulate emotions, improve interpersonal relationships, and develop coping skills to manage distressing thoughts and behaviors.

DBT emphasizes finding a balance between acceptance and change.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a therapeutic approach rooted in mindfulness and acceptance principles. It aims to help individuals develop psychological flexibility, which involves being present in the moment, embracing uncomfortable emotions, and committing to values-based actions. ACT encourages clients to make meaningful life choices while reducing the impact of negative thoughts and feelings.

ACT is effective for treating anxiety, depression, stress, chronic pain, trauma, and other mental health challenges. It empowers individuals to face discomfort and uncertainty with greater resilience, enabling them to lead more authentic and values-driven lives.

Prevention and Positive Psychology

Positive psychology is a scientific field that studies the factors that contribute to human flourishing and optimal functioning. It shifts the traditional focus of psychology from primarily addressing mental health issues to also exploring what makes life meaningful, fulfilling, and joyful. Positive psychology aims to understand and cultivate positive emotions, strengths, virtues, and the conditions that lead to a thriving life.

A strength-based approach within positive psychology involves identifying and leveraging individual strengths and talents to enhance well-being and overcome challenges.
